@Katalynn Rodgers
Thanks for writing, Katalynn, and thanks even more for your dedicated service to our nation.

It's great that you have an interest in a career as a veterinary technician. The best place to turn to for guidance regarding education questions and career opportunities is the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). They should be able to answer all of your questions. You can check them out at www.navta.net.

As for the scholarships you mentioned, we only provide scholarships to students seeking a degree as a veterinary doctor. Perhaps the folks at NAVTA can provide you with more information regarding possible scholarships for veterinary technician students.

Good luck as you embark on a new chapter in life. And thanks again for your interest.

Hello,

I am a United States Marine and am about to be separating from the Corps. I will have about a year still in California and want to get started on my path to becoming a Veterinary Technician. I am unsure as to whether I should start schooling before moving home.
Also, I have seen the information provided about scholarships, but I'm confused about whether I can apply for them without currently being enrolled.

Hi David,
Thanks for writing. And it’s great to hear that your daughter has an interest in the rewarding career of large-animal veterinary medicine.
You can find a listing of all AVMA-accredited veterinary schools on our Website.
We don’t know of the existence of a complete list of all pre-vet programs, due to the large number that exist around the country. Generally speaking, any comprehensive program that leads to a biology or animal science undergraduate degree should provide the required courses that would be characterized as “pre-vet.” You can find more information for prospective veterinary students on the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges’ Website.
For possible contact information of large-animal veterinarians who have an interest in mentoring or sharing ideas with future large-animal veterinarians, we suggest contacting the American Association of Bovine Practitioners. They should be able to help.

Greetings,
great info posted here. My 17yr old daughter has wanted to be a large animal vet most of her life. She has taken all the classes her HS offers to help prepare her for vet school and she's done volunteer work at the local vet. My question is WHERE can I get a list of all the various PRE-VET and VET schools in which she can research for college attendance? I'd also like to get a list of (large animal) vets around the country to contact for guidance/mentorship for her while getting her degree. Thanks again..david

Hi Caitlyn,

Thanks so much for writing. If you’re looking for information on scholarships and other financial assistance, a good place to start is the Student Financial Resources section on the Student American Veterinary Medical Association web page on the AVMA website. You’ll find information there about available veterinary scholarships and loan repayment programs that might be appropriate for you. Once you start your studies, you might also consider joining the Student AVMA, which also offers scholarships, grants and financial awards for veterinary students.

Hi,
     my name is Caitlyn and I will be attending Texas A&M University-College Station, TX in the Fall of 2011 to major in pre-vet med and hopefully will continue on to veterinary school at A&M for a year, transfer to Colorado State University- Ft. Collins for a year, then to University of California- Davis for a year, then back to A&M to graduate with a doctorate for Equine Veterinary Medicine/Surgery. Are there any scholarships I can apply for through the AVMA?

Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Caitlyn

Hi Alicia,
Thanks so much for writing, and good luck on your studies. You’ll find information there about available veterinary scholarships and loan repayment programs that might be appropriate for you. We also suggest contacting veterinary wildlife organizations, such as the American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians, as well as veterinary pathology organizations like the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Groups such as these may also offer information on scholarships and other forms of financial assistance. Once you start at PEI in the fall, you might also consider joining the Student AVMA, which also offers scholarships, grants and financial awards for veterinary students.

I am a US student who will be attending vet school in PEI this upcoming fall. My interests are in wildlife veterinary medicine and pathology. Do you have any suggestions for good places to look for scholarships for vet students, or even more specifically wildlife/ pathology?

@Hayley
Hi Hayley. Thanks for writing. We are unaware of any scholarships available to U.S. veterinary students who are interested in studying veterinary medicine abroad. We suggest contacting the Royal Veterinary College to see if they might have scholarships available or might be aware of other scholarship opportunities for U.S. students available in the UK. If you have an interest in a particular field of veterinary medicine, like poultry or bovine practice, for example, you might want to look into contacting the organizations that represent those areas of practice. You might also want to contact the British Veterinary Association. They may also have information on scholarships that are available to UK veterinary students.
