AVMA VMAT Teams Help Animal Victims of Hurricane Sandy

Canada geese, double-crested cormorants, ring-billed gulls, and various species of snakes and water turtles affected by oil spills related to Hurricane Sandy have a team of AVMA Veterinary Medical Assistance Team members to thank.

The members of the VMAT 2 team, working under the supervision of Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research Inc., assisted in the washing of the oiled animals and in providing general daily care and husbandry support. In all, more than 200 wild birds and other wildlife living in local marshes and other habitats required rescue and assistance due to the oil spills.

We tip our hat to those who deployed in response to the crisis and lent their expertise to help our wild friends recover from the storm.
