AVMA’s Anniversary: 150 Years and Counting

It’s been said that chains don’t hold our relationships together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads that sew people together through the years. In the AVMA’s case, the threads that keep us together today number more than 84,000 – one for each of you.

As we celebrate our 150th anniversary this year, we are doing so with each one of our members in mind, because it is you that makes us strong and keeps us vital. We thank you for your continued membership and support, and we invite you to join us during 2013 as we mark our founding 150 years ago.

We’ve got events planned throughout the year, and we hope you’ll join us as we look back at the advancements made in the past 150 years and look forward to what the next 150 years will bring. Keep an eye on your AVMA@Work newsletter, visit our 150th Anniversary web page, and connect with us on Facebook and Twitter so that you don’t miss opportunities to participate and important news about what the AVMA is doing to recognize 150 years of veterinary education, science and service.

There’s no better place to start your journey than to check out our interactive historical timeline and our very own 150th anniversary videos. Fun and informative, the videos were made possible by the many AVMA members who offered their insights into why they love veterinary medicine and how proud they are to serve both human and animal health. Chances are that you’ll recognize a few of the faces and voices on the video, too.

The 150th interactive timeline takes you on a retrospective trip back to 1863, when organized veterinary medicine first took hold in the U.S. You’ll walk through time as we highlight advancements made in both the association and the profession. We also throw in some interesting factoids and tidbits about societal highlights that shed some light on what our nation experienced along the way.

One of the highlights of this year’s celebration is the publication of a very special book, “The AVMA: 150 years of Education, Science & Service.” You can own a piece of history with this 9-by-12 inch coffee table book containing more than 200 pages dedicated to the history of the AVMA and veterinary medicine. You can purchase a copy of this limited-edition book for just $25, plus shipping cost, by visiting the AVMA Store

So join us as we celebrate a milestone year. You’re a big part of our success and our longevity. Here’s to you – and to 150 more years of excellence in education, science and service.

  1. This year marks my 50th year in the greatest profession on earth! What is amazing? I have been here for 1/3 of the intire AVMA life. What a wonderful life we have had. So many new procedures, drugs, equipment, treatments, and discoveries in all the vast landscape of veterinary medicine, actually this is so enormous, one cannot comprehend it.
The members of our era can only be proud of our profession and the many folks who have made it what it is.Through
all of this the AVMA has been the guiding light for all to witness! THANK YOU!!!

    • Thanks so much for writing, Dr. Hayes. Your support and kind words for the association are greatly appreciated. It goes without saying that our members have helped the AVMA grow over these many years in both numbers and stature. A light is only as bright as those who carry it. Thank you for being a valued torchbearer, and for your continued involvement with, and your passion for, veterinary medicine.
