Is Your Practice Prepared for a Disaster? It’s Easier Than You Think!

On April 10 two Veterinary Medical Assistance Team (VMAT) members and I gave presentations at a day-long seminar sponsored by the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association in Waltham, MA. Veterinary Practice CPR: Continuity, Planning and Recovery provided approximately 70 veterinarians and practice managers with information about disaster planning from experts in the areas of law, data management, insurance and finance. Several veterinarians gave first-hand accounts of disasters affecting their homes and practices, sharing what went well, what didn’t go so well, and what they would do differently. Another veterinarian discussed how she developed a disaster plan for her practice with the encouraging message that creating a plan is easier than you think.
Check out the AVMA’s Disaster Preparedness for Veterinary Practices brochure and Emergency Planning Resources for Veterinary Practices resource page for information on creating a disaster plan for your practice.
