On Sunday, July 21, Approximately 40 VMAT members were in Chicago to celebrate VMAT’s 20th Anniversary at the 2013 AVMA Convention. Dr. Doug Aspros, 2012-13 AVMA President and now AVMA’s Immediate Past President; Dr. Richard Streett, President of the AVMF Board of Directors, and Dr. John Brooks, Chair of the AVMF Disaster Task Force were on hand to help recognize VMAT’s accomplishments and continued role in helping the nation be prepared for disasters.
The AVMA Convention also marked the launch of VMAT U, VMAT’s education and training division, with a day-long session of lectures on Saturday, July 20. VMAT U will formalize and standardize the training VMAT members have been providing to state veterinary response organizations, state veterinary medical associations and other related groups for many years. The program also incorporates materials recently updated by the Department of Health and Human Services’ National Veterinary Response Team program (DHHS NVRT) and shared with AVMA VMAT.
VMAT U was out the door last weekend as a team of six VMAT volunteers traveled to Oklahoma to present lectures at meetings in Tulsa and Oklahoma City hosted by the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps and Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association. VMAT will be on the road providing training to other organizations. Stay tuned for updates.
