Whether it’s an actual party in your clinic or a virtual party via Facebook, celebrating National Pet Week® (May 4-10) can help you strengthen your ties to clients and possibly even connect with new ones.
Here are some ideas from our Pet Week website, petweek.org:
• Open up your clinic with behind-the-scenes tours. Your day-to-day workspace has lots of surprises to educate and delight pet owners. Are you lucky enough to have an on-site lab? Chances are good that most of your clients have never seen one. How about your kennel? Most pet owners probably would love to see where you house their pets during family vacations or when they’re recovering from anesthesia. Even the wash basins where you give baths might be of interest.
You can hold an open house or ask clients to register in advance by sending you an email (and now you have their email addresses!) or posting a note on your Facebook page (where they can see the great info you share in your feed). Or set up a Facebook event where clients can RSVP, so their friends also can be notified of the event when they confirm attendance.
During the event, you can keep little ones happy and busy by stocking your clinic with free coloring book pages from our online store. We offer free PDF downloads of our veterinary career coloring book in both English and Spanish, and a bilingual dog bite prevention coloring book, in the children’s materials section of the store. We’ve even got a comic book that you can download and print for free.
• Host a virtual party on Facebook or your other social media channels. Invite your clients to celebrate their healthy pets by sharing pictures and stories on your Facebook page. You can even host a pre-party by calling for photo submissions from clients who would like to see their pets featured on your Facebook cover photo. Here’s an example of how we did this last year on our own Facebook page.If you (or your clients) prefer Flickr to Facebook, you can set up a group there to collect your clients’ photo submissions. (See our Pearly White Pets group celebrating Pet Dental Health Month for ideas.
• Sponsor a poster and writing contest. Post all the entries on a National Pet Week® celebration wall in your clinic, and feature the winner on your Facebook page. The 2014 National Pet Week® theme is Celebrate Healthy Pets, so you could make that the theme of your contest. Or you could use the 2015 theme, Adopt a Pet – A Promise of Love, and enter your clinic’s finalists or winner into the AVMA Auxiliary’s annual National Pet Week® Contest. See the Poster and Writing Contests page of petweek.org for entry forms, and get additional information by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 847-285-6747.
These are just a few ideas; you can look to petweek.org for more suggestions for celebrating National Pet Week® in your clinic. We’d love to hear other ideas as well, so please share them in the comments section. Also let us know if there are additional materials you’d like us to provide to make National Pet Week® activities easier for you.
