Republican physician and former veterinarian Dr. Ralph Abraham will be heading to Capitol Hill in January after winning the runoff election for Louisiana’s 5th district on Dec. 6. Abraham will be joining veterinarians Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.) and Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) in the 114th Congress as the third elected official with a veterinary medical degree.
Abraham is an alumnus of Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. He worked as a veterinarian in rural Richland Parish, La., during the 1980s, where he helped build a thriving veterinary practice. He later decided to enroll in medical school and now works as a general family practitioner. He is also a pilot and veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
We are thrilled to see another elected official with a DVM on his resume serving in the next Congress.
