Have you been on National Journal’s website today? If so, you probably saw a certain rooster telling Congress to “cock-a-doodle do something” on a vital bill that will place more veterinarians into rural areas where they are needed most.
AVMA’s latest ad campaign, which runs March 16-29, discusses the importance of the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) Enhancement Act (S. 440). Introduced in the Senate on Feb. 10, this bill will help ensure that America’s rural communities get access to the veterinary care they desperately need by enhancing the federal program that provides loan repayment to veterinarians in exchange for their three-year commitments to practice livestock or public health medicine in a USDA designated shortage area. The bill, which is one of the ones that our recent fly-in participants spoke to Congress about, will exempt VMLRP awards from a steep 39 percent federal income withholding tax, so that more veterinarians will be given the opportunity to provide vital food safety and animal and public health services while maximizing the money that Congress appropriates to the program.
