Addendum – 4/28: Updated to include new FDA enforcement discretion for temporary distribution of products from two additional foreign sources.*
Supplies of large-volume fluids are anticipated to increase soon, based on updates AVMA has received (also see April 8 blog post Coming soon: Large-volume fluid units).
On Monday, the FDA announced its immediate plan to use enforcement discretion for the import of foreign-manufactured fluids that have the appropriate labeling. FDA also emphasized its continued efforts to help to ensure adequate long-term availability of large-volume fluids that are produced in a manner consistent with FDA’s expectations. Veterinarians and others can sign up to get updates that are made to the FDA’s web page, Large Volume Intravenous (IV) Solution Shortages.
Additionally, Zoetis has reported that veterinarians can continue to contact their regular distributors in order to inquire about supplies of Plasma-Lyte ® and Lactated Ringer’s Solution. Zoetis colleagues shared with AVMA that it is making available shipments of five-liter volumes of both in “mid-April.” Zoetis has also shared its continued coordination with FDA to explore other potential solutions.
Large-volume units are reportedly also set to arrive from Australia in late May. Animal Health International reported that it will be receiving a shipment of five-liter Hartmann’s IV solution from Sypharma. The distributor also shared its continued coordination with Sypharma for lead times related to future shipments to the USA.
*On April 24, FDA announced Dechra Veterinary Products will provide products from its Ireland manufacturing facility via distributor Vedco Inc. Baxter Healthcare Pty. Ltd. in Australia will distribute products via Henry Schein Animal Health.
