Updated video can aid in disaster planning

Have you been encouraging clients and friends to review – or make – emergency preparedness plans in conjunction with National Disaster Preparedness Month? Here’s an easy way to help: We’ve updated our emergency preparedness video, and it’s now on YouTube where you can easily share it.

The video, Saving the Whole Family: Disaster Prep and Your Pets, features AVMA member Dr. Heather Case, a former director of scientific activities for the AVMA who now serves as executive director of the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Dr. Case walks animal owners through the basics of making an emergency preparedness plan and disaster prep kit – everything from gathering emergency contact numbers, to making a temporary litter box, to making sure to have proper identification in place for animals.

The video isn’t only about cats and dogs, either. Dr. Case also discusses special considerations for horse and livestock owners.

Please share this video with clients and colleagues to encourage them to think about how they would care for animals in case of an emergency. You can even place the video directly on your own website using YouTube’s easy embedding code.

While you’re at it, don’t forget to review your own clinic’s preparedness plan to make sure it’s up-to-date. Our website has preparedness planning tools specifically geared to veterinarians, as well as how-to advice for animal owners. You can find all that and more at avma.org/disaster.
