Earn CE exploring hot topics in veterinary medicine

2016-Conv-New-Heights-300What’s the most pressing topic in veterinary medicine that you wish you knew more about? Are you unsure of the requirements for issuing international pet health certificates? Would you like to take a deep-dive into wellness issues, what it means to try to “have it all,” and what roles gender and debt play in that equation? Are you worried about the growing mountain of student debt facing new veterinary graduates, and what can be done to improve their financial outlook?

Whatever your hot-button issue, there’s an excellent chance you’ll find one or more continuing education (CE) sessions addressing it during the upcoming AVMA Convention in San Antonio. In fact, the CE line-up includes nearly 20 “Hot Topics” sessions addressing the most current issues bubbling up in veterinary medicine. These include everything from student debt to honey bees, and from DEA regulation of controlled substances to Zika virus and Chagas Disease.

Here are a few examples:

  • Veterinarians and the DEA: Find out what you need to know to ensure that you are DEA-compliant in your handling of controlled substances, as well as current drug trends related to controlled substances and how these can impact registrants.
  • Monitoring Your Clinic’s Online Reputation in 15 Minutes a Week: Learn strategies for quick and easy monitoring of your veterinary practice’s social media channels, online review sites and overall digital reputation – with emphasis on reviews and the best practices for responding.
  • Fix the Debt…Our Future, Our Responsibility: What’s Next? This session will continue the work of the recent “Fix the Debt” Summit co-sponsored by the AVMA and AAVMC and hosted by Michigan State University. Review the background and strategy for addressing the debt-to-income ratio for the veterinary profession, discuss recommendations to address the debt problem, and provide your own feedback and perspectives on these issues.
  • Gender, Debt and Having it All: Explore how having it all affects both women and men, and how debt plays a role. Questions to be explored include: Why are “Having it All” topics assumed to be directed at women? Is having it all different for men and women? Why is there an assumption that the “all” part is the same for everyone? How does debt affect the equation? Is work-life balance a gender issue or a millennial issue?
  • The Responsibilities of Veterinarians with International Pet Export Health Certification Procedures: USDA-APHIS international pet travel experts will give an overview of accredited veterinarian responsibilities and the steps to follow when issuing international pet health certificates. Specific guidance will be provided to demystify health certificates for the export of dogs, cats and ferrets to the European Union and other countries.

Those are just a handful of the offerings in the Hot Topics CE track. We encourage you to visit avmaconvention.org/ce to view the complete array of “Hot Topics” that will be presented.
