Advancing veterinary medical educationIn order to determine that the Standards of Accreditation (Standards) continue to be adequate and relevant, the Council on Education (COE) conducts an ongoing review of the Standards. Ongoing review of the Standards is accomplished by a review of the Standards as a whole once every four years, and through a comprehensive review of three to four Standards each year on a cyclical basis. The Academic Affairs committee of the COE is charged with the ongoing review of, and recommendations for improvement of, the Standards to the COE, along with recommendations regarding Council policy and procedure. The COE is responsible for developing, adopting and implementing the Standards for the accreditation of veterinary medical colleges/schools who grant the DVM or equivalent degree. Input from all stakeholders is received and considered by the Council in the revision of existing Standards and the development of new Standards.

The Academic Affairs committee received the reports from the working groups on organization, diversity, and the SAVMA proposal, and comprehensively reviewed Standards 7 Admission, Standard 8 Faculty, and Standard 9 Curriculum. The COE at their September 2016 meeting approved proposed revisions to Standard 1 Organization, Standard 6 Students, Standard 7 Admission, Standard 8 Faculty, Standard 9 Curriculum, and Standard 11 Outcome Assessment (additions are underlined, deletions are struck through). The proposed revisions to the Standards and the rationale for the changes can be found here.

Written comments regarding Standards 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 must be postmarked by (or e-mailed no later than) December 1, 2016. All comments will be forwarded to the AVMA Council on Education for consideration. Mail comments to Millie Maresh, Administrative Assistant, AVMA, 1931 N Meacham Rd., Ste. 100, Schaumburg, IL 60173-4360; or send via e-mail.

The report from the working group examining the proposal from SAVMA to add language to the existing standards or as a new twelfth standard regarding (1) veterinary education costs, (2) counseling, and (3) education and resources for career, well-being, personal finance, educational debt repayment options, and business management for professionals, is currently under review by the Academic Affairs committee of the COE.  The committee will be forwarding its recommendation regarding any proposed changes to the Council for their consideration.

Update on USDE Recognition of COE

The COE received a letter, dated September 22, 2016, from the United States Department of Education (USDE) asserting the Department is satisfied that accreditation by AVMA-COE is a required element in enabling the institutions the COE accredits to establish eligibility to participate in non-HEA federal programs. The Department renewed the recognition of COE as a recognized accrediting agency for one and one-half years from the date of the letter.
