Applications due January 20, 2017
Every year, a handful of veterinary students travel to AVMA’s headquarters outside Chicago to take part in an externship unlike any other – one that gives them a taste for what it’s like to serve their fellow veterinarians by working with the AVMA.
Applications are now open for the 2017 AVMA Headquarters Externship Program, which offers hands-on experience promoting veterinarians, advancing veterinary medicine and helping to shape the veterinary profession.
The AVMA Headquarters Externship was developed for students who are looking to explore different opportunities within the veterinary profession. The externship is open to all students who are members of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA), and the AVMA will provide 10 stipends up to $2,000 for externships lasting 3-4 weeks in 2017.
What does an AVMA extern do?
Just as there’s no other student externship opportunity quite like this one, there’s no single formula that defines what every AVMA extern’s experience looks like. Monica Chen, a Midwestern University CVM student, helped to develop a new policy regarding emotional support animals when she did her externship with the AVMA Animal Welfare Division earlier this year. Elizabeth Johnson worked with economists in the Veterinary Economics Division to co-author this article on student debt. Kelly Arthur, Sam Scholz, and Charisse Ongie served externships in three different AVMA divisions in 2015 and worked on a wide variety of projects, ranging from analyzing animal health research grants to creating client handouts for veterinarians to use in clinics.
Student externs can spend all of their time working in one division or divide their time among various divisions, depending on choice, time, and availability. AVMA divisions that might be of interest include:
- Animal Welfare
- Marketing and Communications
- Convention and Meeting Planning
- Education and Research
- Membership and Field Services
- Animal and Public Health
- Veterinary Economics
- American Veterinary Medical Foundation
- Diversity and Inclusion
