Pet evacuation kit: Help clients prepare for emergencies

Save the Whole Family Include Your Pets in Your Disaster PlanWith Hurricane Irma barreling through the Caribbean and wildfires scorching a large swath of the western United States, animals and people alike are feeling Mother Nature’s fury.

With that in mind, we’ve added a checklist of supplies for pet evacuation kits to our disaster preparedness materials for your veterinary clients. We hope this new tool will help those in the path of any natural disaster prepare properly to bring their pets with them if they need to leave home.

The checklist accounts for essential items and tasks that pet owners should line up before evacuating. These include:

  • Food and medicine
  • First Aid supplies
  • Sanitation items
  • Important documents
  • Travel supplies
  • Comfort items

The pet evacuation kit is available along with other disaster preparation resources on the Pets and Disasters page of the AVMA website. Another important tool that you can share with clients is the downloadable emergency contact cards we provide for both pet and livestock owners.

September is National Disaster Preparedness Month, and we urge all of our members to share this important information with clients. For all who are not dealing directly with Irma, Hurricane Harvey, or the western wildfires, these disasters serve as stark reminders of the importance of planning and preparation in advance of emergencies.

Please take time to make an emergency plan for your home and business, review your existing plan if you have one, and share information with your clients to help them save the whole family in the event of a disaster.
