Scholarships help AVMA members grow as leaders

AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference January 4-7, 2018Editor’s Note: This post has been updated to reflect an extension of the scholarship application deadline to Nov. 17, 2017.

Do your future goals include taking on a leadership role in veterinary medicine? If you’re ready to invest in your growth as a leader, the AVMA is ready to invest in you.

Nov. 17 is the deadline for AVMA members to apply for scholarships to attend the 2018 Veterinary Leadership Conference in January. Scholarship stipends are available to up to 10 veterinarians who fall into either of these categories:

  • Emerging leaders who graduated from veterinary school within the past 15 years
  • Veterinarians who are part of a demographic, geographic, or socioeconomic group or practice type that is under-represented in U.S. veterinary leadership

The scholarships, offered in partnership with Zoetis, provide $1,000 to each recipient to help with the cost of registration, travel and meals while attending the Veterinary Leadership Conference.

Why attend the Veterinary Leadership Conference?

The VLC is a unique meeting offering three days of networking and workshops to help veterinarians develop and hone the skills needed to take on leadership roles within the veterinary profession. It is open to any veterinary professional interested in learning about leadership, team building, and how the AVMA works.

“VLC is a hidden gem that develops connections between proven leaders of the profession and aspiring leaders while addressing the most vital issues of our profession,” said Dr. Maggie Canning, who attended the conference this year. “The 2017 VLC was, to me, an unparalleled conference that prioritized networking, built new friendships with colleagues, sparked dialogue about vet medicine’s largest unspoken challenges, and gathered some of the youngest, most passionate leaders in our profession.”

“The VLC promotes collegiality within our profession and ensures that the integrity of our field is maintained,” said Dr. Jennifer Lei, who attended as an emerging leader. “It is so important that every veterinary professional attend this conference, regardless of age or type of veterinary field.”

Learn and network with peers

The Veterinary Leadership Conference is the perfect place for veterinarians to explore and cultivate leadership skills with a diverse group of colleagues. Attendees include AVMA leaders (including officers and members of the Board of Directors and House of Delegates); staff and volunteers from state veterinary associations; early-career veterinarians seeking deeper involvement with veterinary organizations; veterinary student leaders; and others interested in veterinary advocacy and leadership. Workshops cover a wide range of topics, and continuing education (CE) credit is available for attending selected sessions.

Attendees laud the Veterinary Leadership Conference as empowering, inspirational and even life-changing. The conference will take place Jan. 4-7, 2018, in Chicago. Learn more at avma.org/VLC, and consider applying for one of this year’s scholarships before the Nov. 17 deadline.

Special thanks to Zoetis for its continued support of VLC and its commitment to the veterinary profession.
