Tara Southwell is a state policy analyst in the AVMA Communications Division’s Department of State Legislative and Regulatory Affairs. In this role, Tara is responsible for researching, tracking and analyzing state legislation, state regulations and current laws relating to the practice of veterinary medicine and animal welfare. She provides this research and analysis to state veterinary medical associations in order to support their advocacy efforts.
Tara received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Montana State University and her law degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. She began working for the AVMA in March 2007.
Tara came to the AVMA with a background in politics, having worked for several senators and representatives at both the national and state level. She has always been an animal lover, which greatly influenced her choice to work for the AVMA. Tara grew up with dogs and currently has a 5-year-old black Lab mix.
