Calling on Congress

The AVMA is very engaged in the political process. Our involvement is critical when it comes to affecting and advancing state and federal legislation that impacts veterinary medicine and those who practice it.

The 112th Congress will convene next month, and our Governmental Relations Division (GRD) is gearing up for another year of working closely with members on both sides of the aisle. We will have an ambitious legislative agenda, and our GRD staffers on Capitol Hill, as well as AVMA leadership and headquarters staff, will be working hard to see that many of our legislative objectives are met.

A few items of great importance that we will continue to pursue in the 112th Congress include the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program Enhancement Act and the Veterinary Services Investment Act. We’re also committed to helping strengthen federal employment of veterinarians. And we’re also focusing our energies on many small-business related issues.

We need your help if we are to succeed. And that’s why Dr. DeHaven and I invite you to join the AVMA’s Congressional Advocacy Network (AVMA-CAN). When you become a member of AVMA-CAN, you’re supporting your profession by advocating for those issues that directly impact our lives on a daily basis. As a member of AVMA-CAN, you’ll receive updates on current legislation and regulatory measures, and you’ll be able to stay in contact with federal officials in your home state and around the nation. You can also keep track of key bills and find out how your legislators are voting.

So if you aren’t already an AVMA-CAN member, we urge you to sign up and join your colleagues who are making a difference … today.
