States Show Support for “Year of the Veterinarian”

As part of our 150th anniversary celebration, and with the cooperation of several state veterinary medical associations, we’re seeking gubernatorial proclamations declaring 2013 the “Year of the Veterinarian.” We’re pleased to report that the responses are already pouring in.

After Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal kicked off the state gubernatorial proclamations celebrating 2013 as the year of the veterinarian in honor of the AVMA’s 150th birthday, we also received signed proclamations from Govs. Maggie Hassan (New Hampshire), Susana Martinez (New Mexico), Mary Fallin (Oklahoma), Lincoln Chafee (Rhode Island), Scott Walker (Wisconsin), Robert Bentley (Alabama), Jay Inslee (Washington), Peter Shumlin (Vermont) and Martin O’Malley (Maryland). Governors Rick Scott (Florida), Steve Bullock (Montana) and Paul LePage (Maine) issued letters praising the contributions of veterinarians and encouraging residents in their states to acknowledge veterinarians during this special year.

In addition, the Iowa House of Representatives issued Resolution 16, expressing deep appreciation for the contributions that the veterinary profession and the AVMA have made and continue to make to animal health, public health, animal welfare and food safety in Iowa.

Special thanks go out to the many state veterinary medical associations that have assisted us in obtaining the proclamations and letters. We plan to have all of these tributes on display at the AVMA Annual Convention in July. Hope you can join us in Chicago!

  1. Thanks for the news, Anna! We’ll add the Tar Heel State to our list. Much appreciated!

    • And they keep coming in to the AVMA office. In the last five days, we received or learned about similar proclamations issued by governors in North Carolina, Tennessee, New York and Arkansas. In addition, we received a letter from Montana’s governor commending the AVMA and veterianrians who play a key role in caring for the state’s livestock, pets, and service animals. We can’t wait to display all the proclamations and letters at the AVMA Annual Convention this summer.
