DeBakey Awards Honor Three Biomedical Research Articles on Canines

By: Dr. Whitney Miller, assistant director, Governmental Relations Division

I had the pleasure of attending the annual Michael E. DeBakey Journalism Awards this month as a guest of the American Physiological Society. The awards honor professional journalists whose reporting has enhanced the public’s understanding of how the humane and responsible use of animal models can lead to medical and scientific discoveries.

Three of the categories included articles on canines that have been involved in research, including: research at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland on the signs of post-traumatic stress disorder in military working dogs, Senator’s dog that had been diagnosed with Lymphoma participated in a cancer research project, and an article on the links between canine and human breast cancer.
