September is National Preparedness Month. This is a good time to assess how prepared you, your family and your business are for a disaster. If you have a disaster plan, review it and update it. What has changed since you last reviewed the plan? Are all the contact numbers still current? Check your emergency kit and replace any outdated supplies.
If you don’t have a plan, now is a good time to start making a plan. Many organizations have resources to help you make a plan. Check out the AVMA’s disaster preparedness pages for for pet owners and veterinarians and the AVMA’s disaster preparedness materials which include the AVMA’s Saving the Whole Family brochure which is available in English and Spanish.
The AVMA’s Disaster Preparedness for Veterinary Practices brochure has information on how to create a disaster plan for your practice and the AVMA’s Emergency Planning Resources for Veterinary Practices contains links to additional resources.
