Reaching students through the AVMA Headquarters Externship Program

Are you still not sure which road you might take after vet school? Want to get some hands-on association experience before you earn your veterinary degree? Wondering how the AVMA works to represent its members and the veterinary profession?

If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, and if you’re currently a member of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association, we invite you to apply for an AVMA Headquarters Externship. The program offers students a chance to work directly with the association to make a difference in veterinarians’ lives. Working with AVMA staff members, you can be directly involved in helping shape veterinary medicine.

The externships last between three and four weeks, and student participants can spend their whole externship in one division or divide their time among various divisions, depending on choice, time and availability. AVMA divisions that might be of interest include:

  • Animal Welfare
  • Marketing and Communications
  • Convention and Meeting Planning
  • Education and Research
  • Membership and Field Services
  • Scientific Activities
  • Veterinary Economics

And, since we know that most veterinary students are on a tight budget, the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, our philanthropic arm, continues to generously fund the program, offering five stipends for up to $2,000 that can assist in reducing housing and transportation expenses associated with the externship program. The Foundation also offers externship opportunities for those interested in working with the nation’s only veterinarian-directed animal charity.

So why not check out the AVMA Headquarters Externship Program today? The deadline for submitting externship applications is March 15, 2015.
