The AVMA Governmental Relations Division (GRD) would like to remind veterinary students who are interested in public policy to consider the AVMA GRD Externship Program.
The externship program brings veterinary students to Washington, D.C., for a four-week program where they work side-by-side with the AVMA GRD staff to educate members of Congress and congressional staffers on the organization’s legislative priorities; attend congressional hearings and briefings; and meet with a wide variety of veterinarians in all sectors of the federal government and nonprofit organizations.
The externship program provides students the opportunity to work on issues that affect the veterinary profession while using what they have learned in veterinary school and applying it outside of a clinical setting. Externs learn about federal legislative and regulatory processes while enhancing their skill sets and resumes.
Check out what the AVMA GRD Externship program is like firsthand at the Externs on the Hill blog. Those interested in the externship program can visit the AVMA website for information and look for 2017 applications to be available this summer.
