AVMA Convention 2017 is excited to welcome you to Indianapolis, Indiana, for this year’s annual veterinary conference. Besides incredible CE tracks, a highly-anticipated performance by the Gin Blossoms and a keynote for the ages delivered by Paul Sereno, this year’s convention is held in a lively city with plenty of attractions for attendees.
The “Crossroads of America” has something for everyone, whether you’re into art and culture, or food and history. Indianapolis is especially friendly to families with children, who can have some fun at the Indianapolis Zoo, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and other interactive attractions. From the artsy Mass Ave district to the eclectic Broad Ripple Village, Indy’s neighborhoods boast a vibrant and diverse culture. Use your down time to explore them all, and be sure to see nearby White River State Park, which includes the Canal Walk, Indianapolis Zoo, White River Gardens, Indiana State Museum, NCAA Hall of Champions and more.
For the foodie
What would a host city be without excellent food options? Within steps of the convention center, you’ll find more than 250 dining options. Undergo a culinary awakening from creative local chefs, explore Indianapolis’ thriving craft beer scene and discover other fantastic dining options. Indy has a lot to offer and was recently named “the most underrated food city in the U.S.” by Condé Nast Traveler.
Because the city can be busy in the evenings, we recommend making a reservation with the Dine Around option, which can be chosen when you register for the convention. And, don’t forget to take advantage of discounts at various participating locations with your AVMA Convention 2017 badge and these coupons.
For the explorer
Take a stroll or grab a bike for an adventure on the Indy Cultural Trail. The eight-mile path connects you to these Indianapolis city highlights:
- Capitol Building
- City Market
- White River State Park
- Indianapolis Zoo
- Other can’t-miss attractions
Bikes can be rented at various locations to give you quick and easy transportation between the various neighborhoods and attractions. The Cultural Trail is completely paved and illuminated, so you can enjoy it at your leisure, either during the day between CE sessions, or at night after an excellent dinner with your colleagues and friends. We highly recommend taking a calming float trip along the picturesque Central Canal in White River State Park on a Venetian-style gondola, pedalboat or kayak. You can also explore the Canal with a Segway ride on land.
For the racing fan
Indy is the Racing Capital of the World, home of the iconic 2.5-mile oval and host to the world’s largest single-day sporting event—the Indy 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If you’re a racing fan, you’re in luck; the Brickyard 400 is scheduled for July 21-23, while AVMA is in town. Capture and be a part of the Speedway’s rich 100-year history while checking out the Motor Speedway and Hall of Fame Museum.
For the history buff
Indianapolis is rich with testaments to history. Second only to Washington, D.C., Indy offers more monuments and memorials than any other U.S. city. Take the time to see these humbling memorials:
- Soldiers and Sailors Monument
- Indiana World War Memorial and Museum
- American Legion Mall
- Veteran’s Memorial Plaza
- USS Indianapolis Memorial
- 9/11 Memorial
- And many more
