If you are a second- or third-year veterinary student, we encourage you to apply for one of the many scholarships that will be available through the Merck Animal Health Veterinary Student Scholarship program, offered through the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF).
The program provided scholarships to 34 students last year, and that figure will nearly double to provide scholarship dollars to 56 students with the new infusion of funding. For the current 2017-2018 academic year, these awards will be broken down as follows:
- 10 students with a food animal focus attending schools in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean
- 32 students with a companion animal focus at schools in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean
- 14 students (50% companion animal and 50% food animal) who attend select veterinary schools in Latin/South America and Southeast Asia
The application period opens today, Nov. 15, and runs through Dec. 31, 2017. All veterinary students in the classes of 2018-2019 are encouraged to apply here. Recipients will be notified in March 2018.
Additional scholarship opportunities
The Merck Student Scholarship program is just one of many scholarship opportunities the AVMF makes available to students to help offset the cost of veterinary education. The 2nd Opportunity Summer Research Scholarship is another excellent option for students who have previously conducted a summer research project and are looking to gain a second summer of research experience. This award offers up to five students a $5,000 research stipend, plus $1,000 to travel to the 2018 National Veterinary Scholars Symposium at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. The deadline for applications is Jan. 12, 2018.
Other AVMF student scholarship programs will begin accepting applications in January and March 2018. Visit the student scholarships page on AVMF.org to learn about all AVMF scholarship opportunities, including application directions and deadlines.
Giving to the AVMF
AVMF scholarships are an important investment in the future of the veterinary profession. These financial gifts recognize and reward students who have made extraordinary accomplishments in their education, empowering them to achieve their goals in veterinary medicine. We encourage you to consider making a donation to AVMF student scholarships or other programs that support veterinarians and our profession.
