You know Malala. You might not yet know Shiza. You really should.

Shiza Shahid is a pioneering women’s rights activist who mentored Malala Yousafzai before the Pakistani teen ever became known on the world stage. This weekend, she delivered an impassioned keynote address that brought attendees of AVMA Convention 2018 to their feet, urging us to find and nurture our passions, and use them to shape a better world.

“You don’t just have to practice veterinary medicine,” she told us. “You can shape its future.”

Even if you weren’t able to attend the keynote event, as an AVMA member you can watch Shahid’s inspiring address anytime from now through July 31. The speech was livestreamed on Saturday, and a recording is available for AVMA members to view free of charge, as a benefit of your membership.

We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to hear first-hand the inspiring story of Shahid’s childhood, the opportunities that allowed her to meet and mentor Malala, and how both her life and Malala’s were transformed after a Taliban gunman tried to assassinate Malala as a teenager. Malala went on to become the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize; Shahid became founding CEO of the Malala Fund, has been named a Time Magazine 30 Under 30 World Changer and a Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur, and now hosts the USA Today show “ASPIREist.”

Attendees of Shahid’s keynote address praised it as “outstanding” and “incredibly inspiring.” We’re confident that anyone who views the recording will feel the same way.

“We must never doubt our ability to achieve anything, become anything, overcome anything, and inspire everything,” Shahid told our audience. “I want to urge you to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, to allow yourselves to embrace new ideas. … We have the power to change that which we cannot accept, whether it is in our own lives or in the world around us.”

Shahid’s keynote is available for AVMA member viewing as one of the on-demand CE sessions on avmaconvention.org.

The AVMA Convention 2018 keynote address was sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition.
