The AVMA 2017 Annual Report offers a glimpse into progress the AVMA has made to support our members and enhance the practice of veterinary medicine. Keep an eye out, because JAVMA subscribers will receive a copy of the report with the August 1 issue of the journal. Members who don't receive JAVMA can read it online.

Look through the report, and you’ll learn about the many ways the AVMA works to enable you to keep doing what you love: protect the health and welfare of animals, humans, and the environment that we share. From advocacy and public policy, to supporting students and early-career veterinarians, to providing you with valuable products and services, we’re confident that you’ll be pleased with what we accomplished in 2017 on your behalf.

Here are some highlights from the report:

  • AVMA LIFE and AVMA Professional Liability Insurance Trust (PLIT) merged with the goal to provide enhanced services and expanded products for our members.
  • Our Veterinary Career Center (VCC) was used by 23,907 veterinary job seekers and 3,438 employers, with 17,377 jobs posted during the year. It continues to be the premier job board for veterinary medicine, helping you find new growth and career opportunities for yourself, and great team members for your workplace.
  • More than 1,000 veterinary professionals earned CE credit while learning about different careers during live webinars offered by the VCC.
  • The AAHA/VMG Chart of Accounts was revised, expanded, and made available to all veterinary professionals through an effort initiated and coordinated by the AVMA. It provides an accessible way for smaller practices to better organize finances.
  • We hired our first-ever director of member wellbeing and diversity initiatives, whose work has focused on enhancing the wellbeing of our members and advancing our commitment to ensuring diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the veterinary profession.
  • We introduced our award-winning Wheel of Wellbeing, with small activities designed for veterinary team members to boost mental and physical health.
  • Our charitable arm, the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF), provided nearly $180,000 (as of March 2018) in relief and reimbursement grants to AVMA members and others who lost essential items or delivered emergency support during extreme natural disasters.
  • You – and 5,000 of your colleagues – amplified the voice of our profession by writing and calling members of U.S. Congress to support the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
  • We worked with Congress to secure $2.35 million in funding for the Veterinary Services Grant Program.
  • Our AVMA Political Action Committee (PAC) raised more than $148,000, opening doors for our government relations team to engage with lawmakers and advocate on important issues that impact how veterinarians practice medicine.

With more than 91,000 members and 600 volunteers donating their time and expertise, your association has never been stronger. We encourage you to take a close look at the AVMA Annual Report when it hits your mailbox or download it from our website to learn more about the work we do to help you, your colleagues, and the veterinary profession thrive.
