National Veterinary Technician Week takes place next week, October 14-20, and the AVMA is proud to take part in the celebration. These important veterinary team members make our work possible, doing everything from performing dental cleanings and monitoring anesthesia patients, to taking X-rays and restraining aggressive animals, to answering client questions and providing peace of mind to anxious pet owners.

National Veterinary Technician Week gives us the opportunity to recognize the invaluable role these dedicated professionals play in our healthcare teams.

Though National Veterinary Technician Week occurs just once a year, the AVMA works closely to support the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) all year long. In 2017, we reaffirmed our commitment to NAVTA by entering into a formal partnership. Since then, we’ve provided association management and administrative services to NAVTA, as well as helping keep its members informed about the many AVMA resources, products, services, and initiatives available to help them and their veterinary practices.

Currently, we’re working closely with NAVTA leaders to plan a variety of CE sessions at AVMA Convention 2019, which will take place next summer in Washington, D.C.

The AVMA also has partnered with NAVTA and others in efforts to standardize and improve licensure requirements across the veterinary profession. In April we joined NAVTA, the American Association of Veterinary State Boards, and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges in releasing a joint statement of support for licensing requirements for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. The statement reads, in part: “Licensure of veterinarians and veterinary technicians is key to public protection and helps ensure that our pets, livestock, and other animals receive the high quality of health care they need and deserve.”

All these initiatives underscore the AVMA’s commitment to enhance and support the entire veterinary healthcare team. On National Veterinary Technician Week, we hope you’ll join us in recognizing our valuable team members and showing them the thanks they deserve today and every day. On behalf of the entire veterinary profession, please help us celebrate the invaluable dedication, passion and support of these critical team members who help our practices thrive.
