The AVMA Council on Education (COE) has begun a review of its full set of accreditation standards and is inviting participation from anyone interested in veterinary education.

Every four years, the COE assesses the standards of accreditation as a whole for ease and consistency of interpretation, and to review how each standard contributes to preparing graduates to work as veterinarians. This assessment is in addition to the council’s regular in-depth review of individual accreditation standards.

Two surveys are underway to inform the review:

  • All interested parties are invited to participate in a public survey anytime between now and Dec. 31, 2018. You can find a link to this survey on the AVMA Center for Veterinary Education Accreditation website.
  • The COE has asked a statistically representative sample of veterinarians and veterinary students to take part in a second survey, which looks individually at each component of the standards. This survey also will close at the end of 2018.

After both surveys have been completed, the responses will be analyzed and reviewed by the COE academic affairs committee, which will make recommendations to the full council. The process is described in Section 17.8 of the COE's Accreditation Policies and Procedures.

Thanks in advance to all who complete one of the surveys. The COE welcomes your input.

Volunteer with the COE

Three volunteers will be needed to serve on the Council of Education beginning in July 2019. These volunteers will represent private equine practice, large animal clinical science and veterinary medical research. Candidates interested in the private equine position will find application materials on the AVMA volunteer opportunities web page later this month. The AAVMC Council on Education Selection Committee will appoint volunteers to the other positions and plans to post information on the AAVMC website in January 2019. Volunteer criteria for the open positions include:

  • Private equine practice: Candidates should be involved exclusively in equine practice.
  • Large animal clinical science: Candidates must be faculty members of a university with a COE-accredited school of veterinary medicine.
  • Veterinary medical research: Candidates must be actively engaged in veterinary research for the majority of the time, or the close director of others who are.
