For over 150 years the AVMA has been providing veterinary care to the North Pole’s most valuable animals: Santa’s reindeer! Just this month, AVMA’s president, Dr. John de Jong, completed the annual examination of the reindeer, and we’re happy to report that all nine reindeer passed with flying colors. (He determined that, although unusual, Rudolph’s glowing nose was not cause for concern.)
Now that Dr. de Jong has signed the reindeer's official certificate of inspection for their annual around-the-world flight, it’s time for you to take part in the holiday fun, too. Join Santa’s E.L.V.E.S program (that’s E.L.V.E.S., as in Emergency Landing and Veterinary Expert System) and show your clients that you too, are a key member of Santa’s team. As a member of the E.L.V.E.S program, you’ll be “on call” to assist with any emergencies that might arise during the reindeer’s Christmas Eve flight. Dr. de Jong has ensured the reindeer are completely healthy and have achieved full "RTF" ("Ready to Fly") status, but the E.L.V.E.S. team provides real-time veterinary support on the ground, just in case.
We’ve created a special E.L.V.E.S badge for you to download and share on your social media channels. For the skeptics among your clientele, you also can display the reindeer team's official Certificate of Inspection signed off by Dr. de Jong for Kris Kringle himself. It’s a great way to spread holiday cheer and educate your clients and community about the important role veterinarians play in protecting the health of all species – not just dogs and cats, but also wildlife, exotic species, and of course, magical reindeer.
Before issuing the certificate of veterinary inspection, Dr. de Jong made sure all members of Santa’s reindeer team were up-to-date on their vaccinations, free of disease, and physically fit for their trip. Basically, he performed the same exam needed to ensure that any animal traveling across state or national borders doesn’t spread infectious diseases or parasites to other animals or people. Dr. de Jong also will make a follow-up visit to the North Pole after Santa’s flight to make sure the reindeer haven’t sustained any injuries during their travel. It’s all part of the valuable work veterinarians do to make the world a healthier place for all species.
