Cannabis is a topic of high interest as a potential therapeutic agent for both people and animals. Veterinarians continue to field questions from clients and concerned pet owners about its use, administration, and potential adverse effects. On Saturday, April 20 at noon Central Time, join the AVMA for a free, live webinar that will provide the veterinary community with important updates on this critical topic.

In Cannabis in Veterinary Practice: A Clinical and Legal Update, Dr. Jeffery Powers, vice chair of the AVMA’s Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents, and Dr. Gail Golab, the AVMA’s chief veterinary officer, will lead a discussion about the use of cannabis in veterinary medicine.

You’ll learn about:

  • The history of medical cannabis
  • How cannabis interacts with the endocannabinoid system in domestic animals
  • Major cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis plants
  • What animal and human research to-date tells us about the use of cannabis in veterinary medicine
  • How to recognize and manage cannabis toxicoses in animals

Drs. Powers and Golab also will share information about the federal and state legal framework surrounding cannabis, as well as quality control issues that exist with cannabis-derived products.

Even if you attended our first Lead & Learn webinar on this topic —“What Veterinarians Need to Know about Cannabis”— we strongly encourage you to register for this session. The landscape around cannabis has evolved and will continue to do so, and it’s important for veterinary professionals to stay abreast of the conversation.

As part of our Lead & Learn webinar series, “Cannabis in Veterinary Practice: A Clinical and Legal Update” offers 1 hour of CE credit and is open to all veterinary professionals. AVMA members can participate free of charge, and non-members can register for $25. If you can’t attend the live event, the webinar also will be available for on-demand viewing.
