June webinars: Cannabis use and the state of the equine profession

Cannabis is becoming increasingly available for human recreational and medical use. Should veterinary practices monitor staff use of marijuana and other cannabis products? And, if so, how?

Join us Monday, June 17, at 11 a.m. CT for a live continuing education (CE) webinar exploring the laws, risks, and practical realities associated with clinic employees’ use of cannabis. Attorney Laura Lapidus, management liability risk control director at CNA Insurance, will cover federal and state marijuana regulations, current case law, employers’ rights and obligations, and employee rights in the workplace when using marijuana for medical and recreational purposes.

The webinar, “Cannabis Use by Staff: Laws, Risks and Realities,” was developed in partnership with the AVMA Trust and is supported through an educational grant from Zomedica.

Later this month, on June 27 at 6 p.m. CT, learn about the current state and future outlook for equine veterinary practice in “Equine Medicine: An Economic and Market Outlook.” This webinar will dive into the state of the equine veterinary profession, analyzing what recent economic research may mean for equine veterinarians in practice. Topics will include debt, income, use of veterinary services, and how economic factors can inform decision-making in an equine practice. Support for this webinar is provided through an educational grant from Merck Animal Health and Veterinary Management Groups (VMG).

Each webinar offers 1 hour of CE credit. AVMA members can participate free of charge, and non-members can register for $25. If you can’t attend the live event, the recording will be available for on-demand viewing on AVMA Axon, our digital education website.

We’ve recently added two new on-demand webinars to AVMA Axon.

• “Approved Veterinary Assistants: Untapped Resources” – Explore the role of approved veterinary assistants on the veterinary care team with Janet McConnell, CVT, co-founder of one of the first NAVTA veterinary assistant programs approved by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). Topics include the education, skills, and credentials students can earn in a NAVTA-approved veterinary assistant program; how an approved veterinary assistant can help the entire team work more efficiently; how to add an approved veterinary assistant on your team; and real examples of the benefits of using these team members.
• “Diversity, Marginalization and Intersectionality” focuses on several terms at the forefront of important conversations happening in society and the veterinary profession. Dr. Lisa Greenhill, senior director for institutional research and diversity at the Association of American Veterinary Colleges (AAVMC), shares the definition of intersectionality and how it pertains to veterinary medicine. She discusses the complexities that make up each individual’s personal identity, examples of discrimination and marginalization in the veterinary workplace, and ways to reduce discrimination and marginalization on our teams and in our communities.
