More to love about the AVMA journals

The AVMA journals’ modernization continues. Older issues of both JAVMA and AJVR (the American Journal of Veterinary Research) are being digitized, and readers can now enjoy the first fruits of that effort. All issues from the 1990s are now available to view online, at no cost. 

Editor-in-Chief Dr. Lisa Fortier explained in a recent editorial that this monumental feat was driven by a task force of digitization experts from the library and publishing communities. Why? Because while the need to digitize the archives was clear, an efficient, practical road to achieve it was not. 

With tens of thousands of pages involved, the task force formed a plan to digitize one decade of articles per year, starting with the 1990s and going back to 1970—the most popular years for article requests. And they’ve already delivered for the 1990s! Check out the JAVMA and AJVR issue archives. 

Putting the journal archives online is just one of many recent innovations for the journals. Some of the others:

• Publishing twice-yearly JAVMA supplemental issues on special topics with practical, clinical relevance—like dentistry, nutrition, and dermatology 
• Converting AJVR to an online-only, open-access journal, expanding its reach to researchers and readers across the world
• Launching a weekly podcast, Veterinary Vertex, featuring behind-the-scenes tours of the latest clinical and research discoveries
• Expanding the journals’ social media presence through all major platforms, to help keep you informed of the latest discoveries and promote science literacy
• Introducing online-first and online-only publishing to bring you more scientific discoveries, more quickly
• Reducing the time from article submission to reader access to a remarkable average of less than 100 days—so what you read is always fresh and timely
• Establishing a rapidly growing library of curated virtual collections of JAVMA and AJVR articles on in-demand topics, freely available to all
