President’s Column: Leadership in a new era

My favorite AVMA conference will be here before we know it—the Veterinary Leadership Conference (VLC), taking place in Chicago from January 5-7, 2023. I have been at every VLC for the past 15 years, and they keep getting better.

Attending this stimulating meeting is a great way to improve your leadership skills, whether you’ve just taken on a leadership role in your practice, your state or specialty organization, or even if you’re the AVMA president.

Our theme this year is “Leadership in a New Era” – because great leaders must be forward-thinking and energized to meet the challenges and opportunities we face as a profession.

The VLC provides a unique blend of CE sessions, AVMA governance meetings, and events where you can network with a diverse group of colleagues. Come meet your current AVMA leaders and some rising stars in the profession (yes, that means you!). See how leaders in other states are tackling issues and taking advantage of opportunities.

I have learned so much from the leaders who came before me, and I continue to learn something new at every VLC, from my interactions with students to conversations with industry CEOs. It’s invigorating to hear stories from people across all walks of veterinary life. Their perspectives give me new insights on how we can address issues that we all face at work, whether we’re in private practice, academia, industry, or government. And it’s nice to enjoy a meal with a colleague who lends an ear and helps me clarify my own thoughts and ideas.
