Jarboe to head Army research institute
On Dec 8, 2000 Col Daniel L. Jarboe became the first veterinarian to assume command of the largest biomedical research institute in the Department of Defense. Col Jarboe is now the director/commander of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, located on the Forest Glen Annex of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. Previously he served as the deputy director/commander. The institute, founded in 1893 as the Army Medical School, is now housed in a new complex dedicated in Oct 1999 that includes BL-3 laboratories, animal husbandry facilities, a vaccine pilot production plant, clinical trials center, and sleep research suites. Focus areas include infectious diseases, combat casualty care, operational medicine, and medical, chemical, and biological defense. The institute also directs the work at three overseas laboratories, in Thailand, Kenya, and Germany, as well as two US sites at Brooks Air Force Base (directed energy research) and Great Lakes Naval Training Center (dental research.) In previous assignments, Col Jarboe was the first Veterinary Corps officer to command the US Army Medical Component, Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences in Bangkok, and commander of the US Army Medical Research Unit-Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. "Military veterinarians have always been highly valued members of the team within the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command," Col Jarboe said. "Veterinarians boarded in pathology, laboratory animal medicine, and the clinical specialties, as well as those with PhD degrees, have risen to senior leadership positions in research many times in the past. I believe that this legacy of excellence stems from this command's focus on people as our greatest asset and the solid mentorship that our young veterinarians receive throughout their career." Colonel Jarboe earned his DVM degree from The Ohio State University in 1977 and a PhD degree in microbiology and immunology from the Medical College of Virginia in 1988. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists (immunology) and the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. In addition, he is the consultant to the US Army Surgeon General for veterinary comparative medicine, is a member of the AVMA's Council on Research, and is a graduate of the US Army War College. His honors include the Army Commendation Medal with third Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with third Oak Leaf Cluster, and Order of Military Medical Merit. Colonel Jarboe's wife is Dr. Lorraine K. Jarboe, a private small animal practitioner and diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. | ||
