Event: Virginia Veterinary Conference, Feb. 27-March 1, Roanoke
Awards: Distinguished Virginia Veterinarian: Dr. Richard Wilkes, Chester, was honored for his leadership in veterinary medicine. A 1977 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Wilkes is Virginia state veterinarian. His background in mixed animal medicine, dairy production management, and ambulatory service has enabled him to work effectively with Virginia’s veterinary practitioners and the state’s food animal industry. Paul F. Landis Veterinarian of the Year: Dr. Jesse Webster, Vinton. A 1970 graduate of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Webster owns Vinton Veterinary Hospital. He is a past president of the Virginia and Roanoke Valley VMAs and has served on the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine. Veterinary Service Award: Dr. Richard “Chip” Godine, Ruckersville. A 1987 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Godine co-owns Ruckersville Animal Hospital and serves as Virginia’s delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates. He was honored for his involvement and service to community and veterinary organizations. Mentor of the Year: Dr. Derek Vandrey, Ammisville. A 2000 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Vandrey practices small animal medicine at Warren County Veterinary Clinic. He is dedicated to the Virginia VMA’s mentor program, providing hands-on learning experiences for his mentees. Recent Graduate Leadership Award: Dr. Ashley Morgan, Bethesda, Md. A 2004 graduate of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Morgan is an assistant director at the AVMA Governmental Relations Division. She was honored for her role in providing the Virginia VMA information on federal bills and issues, enabling the association to keep its membership informed, and for serving as an effective liaison between the AVMA and Virginia VMA.
