Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians

Event: Annual meeting, Oct. 23, 2014, Orlando, Florida
Program: The meeting drew 375 attendees. Immediate past president of the AEMV, Dr. Chris Griffin, presided over the meeting.
Awards: Research Grant ($5,000): Dr. Christoph Mans, Madison, Wisconsin, for “Safety and efficacy of tramadol in chinchillas.” President’s Award: Dr. Drury Reavill, Citrus Heights, California. Dr. Reavill was honored for her years of service to the association as chair of the research committee and AEMV board of directors.
Business: The AEMV introduced Marisa Hackemann as the new executive director. She will focus on association organization and management. Dr. Mark Mitchell, Urbana, Illinois, shared results of the survey sent to members of the AEMV, Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians, and Association of Avian Veterinarians. The survey revealed that as the age of members has increased, all the groups need to focus on expanding membership, especially among recent graduates. The survey also showed that members wanted separate organizations but would like to work together as a unified federation in creating one journal and one annual continuing education conference. As such, the AEMV, ARAV, and AAV will hold a joint conference in 2015 in San Antonio so that members will have access to CE on a variety of species at one location.
