Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are important diseases of animals and humans worldwide. The AVMA encourages appropriate funding to advance scientific knowledge of the etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, and control of TSEs. In addition, the AVMA recommends the creation of educational materials for dissemination to the general public. The AVMA strongly supports and encourages national and state TSE surveillance and monitoring programs, and development of effective control programs for TSEs in both wild and domesticated animals. The AVMA encourages the United States Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Health and Human Services to support research for the development of new rapid diagnostic tests, control measures, cleaning and disinfecting procedures, and investigation of the zoonotic potential of TSEs.
