Two honored for disease prevention, control

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention honored two for their work to reduce public health threats within and beyond the U.S.

Dr. Colin Basler and Lt. Cmdr. Neil Vora, MD, received the 2016 James H. Steele Veterinary Public Health Award, which is given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to Epidemic Intelligence Service officers for outstanding contributions to public health and one health.

Dr. Basler, a veterinary medical officer in the CDC’s Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch, was honored for domestic and international contributions toward preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases, including those from foodborne pathogens, the Ebola virus, and the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus.

Dr. Vora, a CDC career epidemiology field officer with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, was honored for domestic and international contributions toward prevention and control of rabies, orthopoxviruses, and the Ebola virus.
